The do's and don'ts of asking for Google reviews.

Google reviews can significantly impact your online reputation and attract new customers. Yet knowing how to effectively ask for reviews — without coming across as pushy — can be challenging. This is the essential guide to encouraging genuine, positive feedback the right way.

The do's

1. Ask at the right time

Timing is everything. Ask when the experience is still fresh — immediately after a purchase, right after a successful service interaction, or when a customer expresses satisfaction. For a café, that might be while they're finishing up. For a service business, a follow-up shortly after the appointment works best.

2. Make it easy

Provide clear instructions and a direct link to your Google review page. A one-tap NFC stand or a QR code on a receipt removes every point of friction. The easier the path, the more reviews you'll receive.

3. Personalise your request

A personalised request is far more likely to succeed than a generic one. Address customers by name and reference something specific about their visit or purchase. It shows you genuinely value their feedback, not just their star rating.

The don'ts

1. Don't pressure or incentivise

Offering discounts, freebies or any incentive in exchange for a review is against Google's policies — reviews can be flagged or removed, and your credibility takes the hit. Focus on genuine service that naturally earns positive feedback.

2. Don't neglect negative reviews

Ignoring negative reviews (or responding defensively) damages your reputation. Reply promptly, professionally, apologise where warranted and offer a resolution. It signals to future customers that you take service seriously.

3. Don't spam your customers

Bombarding customers with review requests is off-putting. One well-timed reminder is usually enough. If a follow-up email doesn't land, wait a few weeks before a gentle second nudge — never more than that.

Bringing it together

Asking at the right time, making it effortless and handling all feedback with care is how businesses build a strong, sustainable Google presence. Personal, respectful and consistent — that's the formula.
